Italy Traffic Fine Check

Private: nothing leaves your browser

Got a letter about an Italian traffic fine? Check it in 2 minutes, free.

Rental company charge, Nivi or EMO notice, ZTL ticket from a city, speed camera: this check tells you what the letter is, the dates that count, what it costs now and later, and whether the dates you type show an objective ground to contest it.

1. Type the dates

What the letter is, when it was sent, the dates and zones on the ticket.

2. Read the result

What the letter means, your deadlines, costs now and later, objective grounds with their source and certainty.

3. Decide

Pay, dispute the rental fee, or prepare an appeal to the Prefect. You choose, you sign, you send.

Free check

Answer with what is written on the letter. You can leave fields empty if you do not have the information; the result will say what is missing.

1. What did you receive?
3. Type of violation
4. Dates on the ticket(s)

6. Official ticket details
The date the ticket was sent to you: postmark or the date printed as "notificato il". Not the day you opened it.
Often printed on the ticket as "dati comunicati dal proprietario in data…". If missing, ask the rental company.
The amount printed as the fine, without postage.
7. Rental company fee (optional)

Nothing you type here is sent to us. The check runs in your browser and the result page reads it from your browser's page storage. We only count that a check was started and completed.

Charged by the rental company after you returned the car?

Damage found after the return, a handling fee for a fine or a toll, fuel: a separate free check looks at the rental company's charge, not at the fine.

What the free check looks at

What it does not do: it does not judge your personal situation, it does not promise an outcome, and it never suggests leaving a fine unpaid.

Frequent questions

Is the letter from the rental company already the fine?

No. Since 2021 the renter answers for the fine, so the rental company only passes your details to the city and usually charges a handling fee. The official ticket arrives later, in your name, and only then do the deadlines start.

What is a Nivi or EMO letter?

A private company that many Italian cities use to notify and collect fines abroad. A "notice before notification" is an invitation to pay, not the ticket. The legal deadlines run from the official notification of the ticket.

Can the appeal be in English?

In practice no: Italian is the official language, the Prefecture forms exist only in Italian and consumer centres report that appeals are accepted in Italian. The appeal we prepare is in Italian with a courtesy translation so you know what you are signing.

What does a rejected appeal cost?

If the Prefect rejects the appeal, the order sets at least twice the minimum fine (for a ZTL entry: at least €166 instead of €83). That is the risk you weigh against the ground you have.

Is this legal advice?

No. It is software that applies general rules to the dates you type. Nobody reads your case, and no lawyer is involved. For anything beyond these objective checks, contact a lawyer or your national European Consumer Centre.
